Dream on! Caitlyn Jenner is appearing on Transparent‘s upcoming third season, and the Amazon series’ executive producer Victor Hsu tells Us Weekly exclusively about the role and why it will have a fantasy-like element. The new batch of episodes for the show — which stars Jeffrey Tambor as retired professor Maura Pfefferman — arrives Friday, September 23.
Hsu spoke to Us at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 7, to shed more light on the episode in which Jenner, 66, will appear as herself. Transparent creator Jill Soloway announced in April at the GLAAD Media Awards that the I Am Cait star would have a role on the Emmy-winning series’ new season, although details of the part had not been disclosed at that time.
“Without giving away too much, she’s part of a scene where we’re having a little bit of a dream sequence,” Hsu tells Us. He reveals it’s a dream that Ali Pfefferman (Gaby Hoffmann) has.
Hsu adds that Jenner will be joined by other actors in the sequence, although the producer remained tight-lipped about who else is joining the decorated Olympian. But Hsu pointed out that it was a delight to have Jenner on set for a day.
“She’s terrific,” he says. “She came in, did the lines and the part, and she was playing herself, so it was easy.”
But what sparked the idea of the Keeping Up With Kardashians mainstay joining the cast in the first place?
“It was kind of a room idea when the writers were getting together about who would be great in this sequence to join us, and Caitlyn’s name came up, and she came to visit the room and met all the writers and agreed to participate,” Hsu says.
Transparent, which has already been renewed for a fourth season, landed a whopping 10 Emmy nominations last month. Its third season launches on Amazon Friday, September 23.
