We mustache a question … what’s going on with Chris Pine’s facial hair?! The Star Trek Beyond star hit the movie’s San Diego premiere on Wednesday, July 20, with scruffy facial hair suitable for the ’70s.
Pine, 35, wore a sleek navy blue suit with Montblanc cuff links and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes for the evening. His dark brown hair was slicked back, all the better to see those striking blue eyes. But most noticeable was his gray-speckled horseshoe mustache. It was a startling downsizing from the full, bushy beard that he sported at the movie’s Sydney premiere on Thursday, July 7. For the San Diego red carpet, Pine opted to shave off most of his facial hair, keeping his sideburns long and some serious stubble going.
It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen facial hair of this magnitude. Pine’s ‘stache reminds Us of another character’s: Silicon Valley’s Erlich, played by T.J. Miller.
Pine’s facial hair isn’t the only thing that’s evolved. Pine, who plays Captain James T. Kirk, recently opened up about how his character has grown throughout the film franchise. “I got the role when I was 27, and now I’m 35, so you grow up a lot in that time,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “In the first one, Kirk was the classic brash, maverick reluctant hero who was raging against all things. He has all these daddy issues, is living in the shadow of his father and has this need to prove himself. [For most people] as time goes on, you settle down and sit more quietly, and all that noise and static starts to dissipate a little. And that is what’s going on with Kirk in this film.”
