Santa Claus just got a whole lot hipper thanks to 2 Chainz!
The Atlanta rapper, 38, introduced a brilliant addition to his collection just in time for National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day on Friday, December 18. (No, seriously, it’s a thing!)
“I’ve been selling merchandise for a while,” 2 Chainz tells Us Weekly. “But this time, I was just inspired by the movement.” That movement is the “dab,” a viral dance craze that originated in Atlanta “like everything else from the past few years!” according to 2 Chainz.
On November 20, the “Birthday Song” lyricist unveiled the Dabbing Black Santa Ugly Christmas Sweater ($39.99, 2chainzshop.com), featuring Saint Nick with his right arm extended and his left hand covering his face. On the same day, he posted via his Instagram, proclaiming that they’re “selling like patti’s pies!” (that is, Patti LaBelle’s tasty sweet potato pies).
Plenty of celebrities have sported these sweaters: pregnant Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss, Carolina Panther Cam Newton and 2 Chainz’s friend and fellow rapper Wiz Khalifa.
“I’m 2 Chainz, baby!” the rapper says. “I’m not surprised that people are showing love.”
And he’s returning the love, too. He tells Us that he’s pocketed “well over a million” for his knitwear, but has already donated some of the proceeds to families in need. He even recently surprised a family in Atlanta with a minivan for their son to go to rehabilitation classes, after the young boy suffered brain damage caused by smoke inhalation from a house fire.
Although the wacky and tacky sweaters may have an expiration date, 2 Chainz thinks that his have staying power.
“I mean, people leave their lights up after Christmas!” he laughs. “You see them in January.”
