Bad breath is not just a problem for commoners. Duchess Camilla has finally confirmed a long-running rumor that garlic is not welcome at royal events.
“I hate to say this, but garlic,” she confessed when asked about what she wouldn’t like to see served at a royal reception. “Garlic is a no-no.”
The Duchess of Cornwall, 70, settled the score while on MasterChef Australia in an episode that aired Wednesday, July 4, where her husband, Prince Charles, was on hand to weigh in on the food prepared by the contestants.
When one of the judges on the cooking reality show, Gary Mehigan, asked, “So garlic is a no-no? Because you’re talking, chatting?” she answered, “Yes, exactly. So you always have to lay off the garlic.” (Garlic isn’t the only food to be frowned upon — other foods also rumored to be banned from royal events include onions, starchy foods like potatoes and shellfish, due to a higher risk of food poisoning.)
That’s not all Duchess Camilla revealed while appearing on the cooking show. She also hinted on how to get a smile out of her 69-year-old husband: serve him local cheeses and “anything with eggs” alongside vegetables.
“He’s a huge cheese fan,” the Duchess of Cornwall told Mehigan. “Anything to do with cheese.”
Meanwhile, getting a reaction out of the Prince of Wales proved to be difficult. As previously reported, the royal didn’t appear to actually try any of the food made by the home cooks, causing many viewers to take to Twitter to complain.
