There’s no doubting that Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are tight. For the second year in a row, the Mindy Project creator brought her longtime friend as her date to the Vanity Fair Oscars party, but this might be the last time he snags an invite.

Kaling, 39, took to Instagram Stories during the celebrity-filled bash to share that her pal, also 39, ate her Oscar night dinner. “Broadcasting from the Vanity Fair viewing party dinner. I ordered a chicken burger for dinner and what did you order?” Kaling asked, revealing that Novak, whom she used to date, was sitting by her side. “I ordered broccoli,” he declared.

After a slight tangent about how no one else was on their phones at the star-studded soiree, Kaling got back to the matter at hand. “He ordered broccoli and I ordered a chicken burger and french fries,” the Ocean’s 8 star continued before asking her fellow Office alum, “And what did you eat for dinner?”

“I ate your chicken burger for dinner,” the Saving Mr. Banks actor said with a laugh.

“Yes you did,” Kaling retorted. However, it didn’t seem like the Champions executive producer was all that phased by her former flame’s sticky fingers. While she joked on Instagram that it’s “always a pleasure” to spend time with Novak, she brushed off the missing meal adding, “Anyway, happy Oscars!”

Given the close nature of their relationship, it’s no surprise that Kaling let the sandwich theft slide. In September Novak was spotted cuddling Kaling’s daughter Katherine, now 14 months, and in April the upcoming star of Late Night got emotional during an interview while recalling how her pal congratulated her on her Wrinkle in Time role.

“When I was coming up there was no one who looked like me on TV or film and that was such a nice thing that he remembered that,” Kaling explained at the time, referring to a tweet in which Novak shared a poster of Kaling’s character from the movie in front of her old apartment. “I was so moved by that. If you dream big, you can get whatever you want.”

Still, despite remaining very close, a romantic reunion likely isn’t in the cards for this adorable pair. As a source previously told Us Weekly, the former costars are “just best friends.”
