Cue the creepy music and the secret government aliens — Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are back! Jimmy Kimmel invited actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on his show to talk about the reboot of their hit ‘90s supernatural crime drama on Tuesday, January 12. But the late-night host, 48, couldn’t resist staging a a little fan-fiction with the pair prior to their interview.
In the Jimmy Kimmel Live! clip, Mulder and Scully walk down the steps in a secret government building where they happen upon an alien. Then FBI agent Kimmel shows up to explain to them that the ‘90s are over, and they no longer need to use ridiculously giant phones or dial-up internet.
“Will the people still like us?” Scully asks, concerned.
“You guys? Oh yeah, of course, we loved you then and we love you now,” Kimmel assures her. “Even if coming back turns out to be a bad idea, like a really, really bad idea that makes everyone hate you, we’ll still always have the ‘90s.”
Before he lets them go, Kimmel has one last enticing suggestion.
“Also, you two should have sex,” he says. “You should, it’s been, like, 23 years, everybody knows. It’s time to do it already.”
The crime-fighting duo barely hesitate before passionately kissing and jumping onto a table to get it on.
Later on Kimmel’s show, the real Duchovny and Anderson opened up about reprising their roles.
“It wasn’t as easy as I expected,” Anderson, 47, admitted to Kimmel of returning to Agent Scully. “I think because I’ve been working really hard to get away from her as much as possible, so I think it took me a while to find her again. Also, I was trying to find the old version of her, not the aged version of her.”
And though they get along well now, the duo conceded that there was some real-life tension between them on set back in the ‘90s.
“We shot in Vancouver, and it’s very moist in Vancouver,” Anderson tried to explain, before bursting out laughing.
“I would finish the story if I had any idea what you are talking about,” Duchovny, 55, piped in, clearly amused by his costar’s embarrassment.
Finally she was able to get part of an explanation out, saying, “It’s the air, so my hair gets very frizzy. It took forever between every single take, that they’d have to stand there and blow-dry my hair again.”
“And I got pissed at that?” he asked.
“I think it added to the tension, the fact that I took so long,” Anderson replied, still laughing.
