All is not merry and bright. Fiona Apple used her hatred of President-elect Donald Trump as inspiration for a parody of the holiday classic “The Christmas Song.”
“Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire/As he keeps nipping at his foes,” the musician, 39, sings on the above track, posted to Tumblr page Fiona Apple Rocks Monday, December 5. “You cry creepy uncle every time he arrives/For he keeps clawing at your clothes.”
In addition to mentioning the 70-year-old’s alleged past with sexual assault, Apple modifies the song’s original lyrics to allude to Trump’s pointed comments about black Americans and the rising presence of white supremacists since he won the November 8 election.
“Everybody knows some money and entitlement can help to make the season white/Mothers of color with their kids out of sight will find it hard to sleep at night,” she continues on the dark a cappella song. “They know that Trump is on his way/He’s got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh.”
Apple — whose last solo release was her 2012 album The Idler Wheel… — stayed quiet throughout the election cycle, but makes her opinion clear on the adapted Christmas carol, ending with a festive message to the future commander in chief: “Donald Trump, f–k you.”
With her anti-Trump tune, Apple joins the ranks of Pusha T, Death Cab for Cutie, Swet Shop Boys and DJ Shadow, who have all released songs condemning the president-elect. Though Madonna — a vocal Hillary Clinton supporter throughout the 2016 election — hasn’t released a protest song of her own, she covered Britney Spears’ “Toxic” at a charity event in Miami Friday, December 2, while images of Trump were projected on the screen behind her.
