Wait, did that just happen? The Walking Dead is certainly no stranger to gruesome character deaths, but on Sunday, Oct. 25, the AMC zombie thriller seemingly killed off one of its OG characters, and the show’s apocalyptic universe may never be the same.
WARNING: Major spoilers ahead! Do not read this if you have not seen the Sunday, Oct. 25 episode of The Walking Dead!
It’s hard to imagine a world without Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), but that’s exactly what Rick Grimes and Co. may have to do come next week.
It all went down as Glenn and Nicholas (Michael Traynor) tried to distract a horde of zombies, and ended up backed into an alley with walkers behind and coming at them. The two men jumped up onto a Dumpster and were fending off the zombies when the newly redeemed Nicholas looks out at the sea of walkers and loses it.
After a simple “thank you” to Glenn, who had recently forgiven him for his terrible deeds, Nicholas shot himself in the head. As his body fell off the Dumpster, it brought the compassionate OG down into the swarm — and potentially turned Maggie into a young widow.
But some fans are speculating that Glenn survived against all odds. How? It’s possible Nicholas fell on top of him, thus protecting Glenn from the ravenous walkers as the they dug into their fresh meal of Nick. Not to mention, he has survived some pretty dire situations in the past. Others also pointed out that The Talking Dead didn’t do an in memoriam for the former pizza delivery guy, which is the norm when a character is killed off.
In Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic book series, upon which the AMC show is loosely based, Glenn most certainly dies at the hands of Negan, the leader of a group called The Saviors, which has not been featured on the show. Many fans had hoped his death would be rewritten since the show has veered off from the comics.
As one of the original Atlanta apocalypse survivors, Glenn teamed up with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) in the pilot episode as they had to make their way through a swathe of walkers undetected.
He met his wife, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan), a short time later, and after she suffered the loss of her father, Hershel (Scott Wilson), and sister, Beth (Emily Kinney), Maggie had only Glenn left.
One thing’s for sure, if he’s really gone, we will never forget this former pizza delivery man, his bravery, or his heart of gold.
