We can’t get enough of This Is Us! Indeed, a friendly warning: If your eyes were dry after watching the Tuesday, September 27, episode of Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia‘s new NBC drama, then you may want to get your tear ducts checked out.
Miguel Calls Out Jack’s Drinking Problem
The show picked up eight years after the triplets were born, and showed a haggard-looking Jack (Ventimiglia) sucking down a dark liquor in a dark bar with coworker Miguel (Jon Huertas). After Jack vented about his strained relationship with wife Rebecca (Moore), Miguel instantly called out the father of three, saying, “She’s raising three 8-year-olds while you’re here drinking … scotch.”
Kevin’s Agent Takes Him Down a Peg
Kevin’s agent, Laney Schultz (Katey Sagal), schooled him on why he should stick out the rest of his two-year contract on The Manny. She recounted discovering him in an improv class and remembered saying to herself, “I have found the least funny person in the entire planet. But I saw something there. And I took you on.” She then made fun of Kevin (Justin Hartley) for wearing a ski cap during a heat wave. Wait, are we supposed to hate Laney Schultz — because we think we love her??
Toby Wants to Be Kate’s Boyfriend
After Kate (Chrissy Metz) lashed out at a few people in her support group, Toby (Chris Sullivan) cornered her and had the sweetest talk about their relationship. He said, “You are at your worst when you’re eviscerating the anorexic lady, and I am still standing here. … Our plane is rapidly approaching the boyfriend-girlfriend zone.” He also joked that he wants to have sex with her. Things are certainly heating up!
Rebecca Tells Jack to “Be a Man”
When Jack came home drunk after the kids were asleep, Rebecca laid down the law when she said, “You’re getting home later and later. … The drinking has to stop. … I won’t have it in my house. … Be a man. Fix it.” We’re loving this fierce mama bear.
Toby Rescues Kate … by Getting Her Drunk!
When Kate took Toby as her date to Kevin’s agent’s “big Hollywood party,” she shut down immediately when she thought people were staring and laughing at her. Toby came to her rescue and said, “You and I are crushing that dance floor. … Come on, we’ll get you drunk.”
We Learn That Randall Struggles With Insomnia
Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) sat down with Randall’s biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), and grilled him on where he goes every day and how he spends his bus money. She opened up about Randall’s struggles with insomnia-induced blindness, saying, “My husband, my mountain of a man, could no longer see things through his eyes. … He pulled himself out of it. He self-corrected.”
Jack Commits to Not Drinking Anymore
In an adorable and heartwarming scene between Jack and Rebecca, Jack promised to give up drinking. They made up when Rebecca said, “You slept outside our door like a Labrador — of course I forgive you.”
We See Present-Day Rebecca, and She’s Married to … MIGUEL?
This show, never short on twists, slapped us with a huge one in the last scene of the episode. Randall’s kids open the door to their home and yell out, “Grandma and Grandpa are here!” Next thing we know, we can see a much older Rebecca standing next to an aged Miguel! Makes you think about that confrontation in the bar at the beginning of the episode. … Do we have a cheating scandal to look forward to? Where’s future-Milo?! So many questions! So little time until next week’s episode!
Tell Us: What do you think of Rebecca ending up with Miguel?
This Is Us airs on NBC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
