His big break! In honor of James Corden’s 38th birthday on Monday, August 22, the BBC archives graced us with some hilarious footage of a 1995 interview he conducted with Meat Loaf.
“Now one of the biggest names in America with The Late Late Show, but he landed his first TV presenter role when BBC1’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick let young talent take over the show,” the BBC’s tweet said.
The TV host hasn’t changed much in the last two decades, and you can tell from the video he was a star even then.
At the beginning of the clip, the “Young Good Morning Showbiz Reporter” tells viewers, “I’m here in London to interview Meat Loaf, and I think this is where he’s staying.” Then just a teen, Corden approaches a hotel doorman and asks, “Excuse me, is this where Meat Loaf’s staying?”
During the segment, Corden enjoys an English breakfast with the “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” singer and asks if he prefers performing or promotional tours. The rock star responds by beating his head against the table. “The table’s too short, and the chair’s too tall, and I just messed up my makeup but that’s exactly what I want to do,” Meat Loaf replies.
At one point, the Carpool Karaoke creator asks whether Meat Loaf would return to acting, and he reveals that he would love to play Jud in Oklahoma. “I’m perfect,” the musician says. “I could play that part in a heartbeat.”
Finally, after some friendly banter, Corden tells Meat Loaf that he’s in a band and asks for advice. “You do the best you can do and you never give up. Never quit,” the “Bat Out of Hell” singer says.
We can only hope that Meat Loaf will visit The Late Late Show soon to reminisce about the moment. Watch the clip above to see the whole interview!
