What a way to kick off 2016! A new trailer for the Sherlock holiday special, The Abominable Bride, has been released by the BBC, and “Sherlocked” fans are squealing with seasonal cheer.
In the spooky new clip, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) are in uncharted territory. A description for the special reads: “Our heroes find themselves in 1890s London investigating a mysterious ghostly bride who appears to have committed murder from beyond the grave.”
“It cannot be true, Holmes, it cannot!” a terrified Dr. Watson exclaims.
“I know it can’t,” Holmes hesitantly assures him.
Cut to a creepy bride, whose face is covered in lace, shooting those who have wronged her.
It’s been almost two years since the acclaimed BBC drama has released a new 90-minute episode. The final episode of series 3, “His Last Vow,” premiered in the U.S. in February 2014. All of the show’s leads have expressed interest in a full fourth series, but due to scheduling conflicts, production has been delayed several times.
Cocreator Steven Moffat told the press in May that filming for series 4 would begin in the spring of 2016 and new episodes likely won’t air until 2017. So for now, let this special tide you over, Sherlock disciples!
Sherlock: The Abominable Bride premieres Friday, January 1, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
