Quick, someone hide Mel Gibson! Ricky Gervais will be hosting the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, making it the fourth time he’s been at the helm of the entertainment ceremony.
But some have been surprised by the news, considering Gervais’ controversial past with the show. After his third time hosting in 2012, he vowed never to do it again, but on Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed the news in a blog post titled “Ricky’s back!”
The Derek star, 54, tweeted his response shortly after, writing, “It’s a good job I’m drunk. Otherwise the thought of hosting The Golden Globes again would seem like a real pain in the arse.”
But that’s certainly not the most offensive or outrageous statement the Brit is likely to make. He has a history of giving Hollywood the middle finger with his vicious rhetoric.
Hosting the show from 2010 to 2012 before duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over, Gervais was able to sprinkle in some well-timed barbs.
“Well done, Winslet! I told ya, do a Holocaust movie and the awards come,” Gervais teased fellow Brit Kate Winslet about her film The Reader, which earned her the best supporting actress award the same year she won the best lead actress in a drama for Revolutionary Road.
