This is what it feels like to go up against Prince in a game of hoops! There have been numerous comedic takes on the music legend’s idiosyncratic persona, but perhaps the most memorable was Dave Chappelle‘s skit in which he played a basketball-loving version of the singer, who died Thursday, April 21, at age 57.
A 2004 Chappelle’s Show sketch featured cast member Charlie Murphy describing a real-life moment in 1985 when he and his movie-star brother, Eddie Murphy, were invited back to the Purple Rain star’s home. Prince later confirmed that the story actually happened, and that he loved the Comedy Central show’s retelling of it.
As the sketch explains, Prince — played by Chappelle — decided that he was bored of partying and listening to music, so he and his backup band, the Revolution, challenged Charlie’s crew to a game of basketball.
The actor assumed the singer was joking, but the offer to play was legit. Prince found T-shirts and shorts for Charlie’s team to wear, but the legendary musician and his band remained in their lavish getups, so Charlie, 56, referred to the matchup as “the shirts against the blouses.”
However, much to Charlie’s dismay, Prince was incredibly skilled at basketball, and the musician’s squad won the game handily. When the match ended, the “When Doves Cry” performer declared victory by saying, “Game: blouses.” And then Prince made everyone pancakes because, why not?
But the story doesn’t end there. Prince was so tickled by the bit that he released a 2013 song inspired by the sketch called “Breakfast Can Wait,” and the cover art featured Chappelle, 42, dressed as the Purple One and holding a plate of pancakes. Truth really is stranger than fiction.
