Ben Affleck pulls double duty in this engrossing thriller, both directing and playing the lead. As a Boston criminal, he falls for the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) whom his crew abducted during a heist — a scenario further complicated by his paranoid, short-fused accomplice (Jeremy Renner). Jon Hamm and Blake Lively are solid in supporting roles, but it's Aflleck the filmmaker who really scores. His strong storytelling makes The Town worth visiting. (Warner Bros., $29)
