Another iconic ‘80s title to add to the list! Molly Ringwald opens up about reviving the decade that helped shape her career in the live-action remake of Jem and the Holograms in the new issue of Us Weekly.
“I feel like I really connect with young people well because of my movies,” the 47-year-old, who starred in iconic films such as Sixteen Candles, explains to Us. “They feel like they grew up with me. They trust me, in a way, which is really nice."
Jem and the Holograms will also strike a nostalgic chord for those who grew up watching the classic '80s cartoon about the music company owner who transforms into the mysterious rocker, including someone very close to Ringwald. “My husband [writer Panio Gianopoulos] is seven years younger than I am, and he totally loved and remembers Jem,” the Pretty in Pink star reveals.
The actress will be portraying Bailey in the film, the aunt to Jem, better known in daily life as Jerrica Benton.
Even though she was a little too old to be a fan of the animated series at the time, Ringwald certainly sees the appeal of it now. “I think it’s really important for kids to feel comfortable with being true to who they are. In a lot of ways, that was what I was doing with the movies I made, and I think Jem definitely has that message.”
And while on the topic of her movies, Ringwald revealed that what happened in detention, stayed there. While The Breakfast Club actress sees her fellow Brat Packers on occasion, they haven’t kept in close touch. “It was a long time ago and we have different lives,” Ringwald explains.
