Sometimes, you want to feel the rain on your skin — and other times, you just want an umbrella. Lauren Conrad is returning to MTV to celebrate The Hills‘ 10-year anniversary, and she tells Us Weekly exclusively about the most “uncomfortable” moment for her during her five seasons on the series. (Note: You might want to stop reading here if your name is “Brody Jenner.”)
Conrad, 30, appears on The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now, airing on MTV Tuesday, August 2, where she revisits the beloved series’ key moments and chats with producers about their behind-the-scenes process. Ahead of the special, she tells Us that, while all of her Hills romantic scenes were uncomfortable because of how many crew members were in the room with her, there is one moment with ex-boyfriend Brody Jenner that stands out for her as the most cringeworthy.
“Actually, one of the scenes they show [in the special] is my first kiss with Brody, and it’s so uncomfortable,” the Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County alum says. “You can totally see this because [the crew members] knew we had previously kissed, and they said, ‘We need you to kiss on camera,’ because back then if it didn’t happen on camera, it didn’t happen.”
“All of these guys [from the crew] I had known for years, and they were so sweet to me,” continues Conrad, whose last Hills episode aired in May 2009. “They felt like brothers to me, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to kiss a boy in front of you guys!’ It was just so weird, so it was really uncomfortable. And so they show the scene [in the special], and then they show me right afterward basically begging to be done and for everyone to go away.”
In reflecting on the jobs she had while she was on the show, Conrad — who tied the knot with William Tell in September 2014 — points out to Us that her Teen Vogue boss Lisa Love was “scarier on camera than she was off.” However, Conrad says she was always concerned with impressing her bosses, despite the fact that she was already employed by MTV on a reality TV show.
“I was always afraid of getting fired because it would have made for excellent television, so I never felt safe!” the fashion designer says. She even points out that producers would joke around about how dedicated she was to the jobs, as she was careful to not even shirk simple tasks like making photocopies.
Conrad, who says that the show’s continued popularity is “a little surprising” for her, reveals that she has yet to decide whether she would show The Hills episodes to her kids.
“I think fortunately I have so much time to figure that out, so I won’t worry about it for a while,” Conrad says. “But I mean, it was a big part of my life.”
“I’m not necessarily ashamed of my behavior at any point,” she continues. “I think I definitely make mistakes, but so does everyone! So yeah, I’m sure at some point if I have children they will see it, but I don’t know. I’m not too stressed about it.”
