You can’t always get what you want! Jennifer Lawrence’s character in the upcoming comedy-drama Joy knows this all too well. Starring in the title role, the Oscar winner teams up once more with her Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle costar Bradley Cooper, and sheds way more tears than Katniss Everdeen ever did.
“Listen to me,” Joy’s mother says in the trailer. “I’ll tell you what’s to come of you. You are going to grow up and become a strong, smart young woman. Go to school, meet a fine young man, have beautiful children of your own, and y’all are gonna grow wonderful things. And that’s what’s going to happen.”
Uh, not exactly.
Aside from her name, Joy is otherwise joyless in the film’s first look. She gets knocked down at work, arrested, and most likely goes through dozens of tissue boxes as she struggles to become the founder of her family business.
“Don’t think the world owes you anything,” Joy says, “because it doesn’t.”
The flick also reunites Lawrence with director David O. Russell and actor Robert De Niro, both of whom worked with her and Cooper on the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook. In February, Lawrence slammed rumors that she and Russell got into a heated on-set argument.
Joy hits theaters on Dec. 25, 2015.
