Ian in Your Ear: Beyonce’s Big Year

Kanye West already boldly decreed that Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" was the greatest video of all time — but, due to the nature of his grandstanding, the message was a little lost. I don't think Yeezy (who's now back in the studio getting back to the music, hallelujah) would have many challengers if he went on to state that she is the greatest diva of all time.

I thought about this while I was held in a brief moment of shock the other night when Mrs. Jay-Z actually lost an award — the People's Choice Award for Best R&B Artist — to Mariah Carey. What? The unstoppable Sasha Fierce hits a stumbling block? Hard to believe, but true…

The reason for my shock and awe? Let's size up Beyonce's 2009:

— Ten Grammy nominations (including Album, Record and Song of the Year)

— Five No. 1 hits, 2.5 million albums, 7 million digital singles and 4.5 million ringtones sold

Billboard's Woman of the Year

— The only female performer to have 14 Top 10 records on the Hot 100 chart this decade

I could go on. But two moments solidified her place in my dark heart for eternity: her mindblowing concert at Madison Square Garden (where she literally walked across the air right below the ceiling without missing a beat!) and gracefully saving the MTV Video Music Awards from Kanye's clutches by handing over her acceptance speech time to Taylor Swift. Suddenly, as if everything else wasn't enough, she became music's Mother Theresa. Put a ring on that!

Can't wait to see B take the stage at the Grammy's, where she'll undoubtedly have more chances to salute anyone she left out at the VMA's! In the meantime, always check the updates at Beyonce.com.
