Here we go! The 2016 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Thursday, Dec. 10, and while many of the expected front-runners received nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, there were several stars, films, and series that were snubbed or surprisingly nominated. Here, Us Weekly rounds up the list.
SNUBS
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
The Tina Fey-created original Netflix comedy series was entirely overlooked, as well as its delightful cast with Ellie Kemper and Tituss Burgess.
The Affair
The Showtime series took home the Globe for Best TV Series in a Drama category in 2014, but Season 2 was not as warmly received by the HFPA this year.
Julianna Margulies
Does this mean no hot husband on her arm? Long a critical favorite, The Good Wife star, who plays Alicia Florrick on the CBS series, was snubbed for her starring role.
Mad Men
While Jon Hamm received a nod for his role as Don Draper on the AMC series, which ended this past year after seven seasons, the rest of the cast — and the show itself — were snubbed from the remainder of the categories.
The Walking Dead
The living snub. While the AMC series continues to dominate in viewer rankings, the HFPA does not seem to be a fan of the apocalyptic zombie drama. None of the series’ cast or crew members were nominated for this year’s Golden Globes.
Straight Outta Compton
Though the SAG Awards looked upon the film favorably, the HFPA entirely overlooked celebrated hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton.
Johnny Depp
Though it seemed as if the A-list actor would be nominated for his portrayal of Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, Depp was snubbed by the HFPA. The silver lining, at least, was that he received a nod from the Screen Actors Guild on Wednesday.
Spotlight
While the film itself received widespread critical praise, its stars Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Keaton were overlooked in the acting categories.
SURPRISES
Sylvester Stallone
The actor best known for his portrayal of Rocky Balboa received a Best Supporting Actor nod for reprising his role (for the seventh time!) in Creed.
Trainwreck and Amy Schumer
Yes, Trainwreck and its leading lady were beloved this past year, but both were surprise nominations for the Globes.
Will Smith
The actor received a nod for his role in Concussion, which was surprising given the stiff competition this year. He faces off against Eddie Redmayne, Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Bryan Cranston.
“Love Me Like You Do” and “See You Again”
From Fifty Shades?! Elie Goulding‘s smash hit was nominated for Best Original Song, along with Wiz Khalifa‘s “See You Again,” which was featured in Furious 7.
