Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams Opens Up About Her “Extremely Awkward” First Ever Sex Scene

Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams opened up to Vulture and Us Weekly about her first ever sex scene in an indie flick called The Falling: "It was quite a big deal," she told Us.

Arya for real? Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams has opened up in recent interviews about her first-ever sex scene — but it wasn't for HBO's smash series.

The actress, 18, stars in a new indie flick called The Falling, in which she portrays a student at an all-girls boarding school in 1960s England, and one scene features her character, Lydia, losing her virginity. "It was extremely awkward!" Williams told Vulture of filming the intimate moment.

Williams also spoke to Us Weekly in detail last month about the filming process. "I was only just 16, so it was quite a big deal. And I guess you just work through it like any other scene and you rehearse, and then you shoot it!" she told Us. "It was literally just the same as any other scene, apart from me doing different activities…. It was really important that we got it all in one shot. The way in which they shot it, they wanted it to be just a flow and not to break it up. They wanted it to go from start to finish with the mother coming in, as well. So we had to get it all timed out perfectly. But it happened. I've done it! First one down!"

She learned that filming sex scenes if very different from what's presented on screen. "We watch them on TV and we're just like, yeah whatever," she joked to Us. "But when you actually in that position, you're like, s— this is a really big deal!"

While filming the nerve-racking moment, Williams luckily received some support from her costar Joe Cole. "Joe was very sensitive to the fact that I had never done a scene like this before, and it was great to work with someone who was so considerate of that," Williams told Vulture. "We went out for a couple of lunches and stuff just to get to know each other, and we had days of rehearsal where we'd get to know our characters and spend a couple of hours with each other. So I knew him quite well, and we got along quite well. It all paid off in the end."

On HBO's Game of Thrones, Williams plays Arya Stark, the youngest daughter of the late Ned and Catelyn Stark, who's become a renegade of her own. In the final moments of last season, the young teen becomes blind in a rather heartbreaking scene.

According to Williams, she opted for her role in The Falling because she wanted to prove herself as an actress. "The reason I wanted to play Lydia in the first place was that she's such a different character than Arya," she dished to Vulture. "When I look at scripts, I always worry that the director isn't going to see past me playing Arya Stark or that sort of character. So I fought for this role, and Carol [Morley, who directed the film] was really open to letting me try out. She really gave me a chance, and I'm so grateful for that. But I wanted to prove myself."

She echoed similar sentiments to Us last month. "I feel like that's who I want to play in movies — the interesting girls that don't get spoken about a lot," Williams said. "And also just to make a good transition into being an adult, not only playing teen roles, but playing something that's maybe a bit more mature. To branch into something so people can see me in an older light and not just as a cute kid."

There was, however, one cute thing she would do on The Falling set: Williams would teasingly threaten to reveal Game of Thrones spoilers to castmates who would annoy her. "That was really, really good," she joked to Vulture. "It was a power I had over the whole cast and crew."
