If you watched HBO’s Westworld on Sunday, November 13, you know that the sci-fi series dropped its biggest bombshell yet in the final moments of the episode titled “Trompe L’Oeil.”
In a shocking, violent reveal, we learned that Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), bereaved father and brilliant engineer of Westworld‘s android hosts, doesn’t just make wildly lifelike robots; he is one.
For viewers who followed the most recent season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, their Spidey senses for something seriously amiss probably started tingling well in advance of that big moment — thanks to a line from Bernard that echoed one of the most heartbreaking scenes in GoT‘s sixth season.
It happened on Westworld when Theresa (Sidse Babett Knudsen), the park’s operations leader, noticed a mysterious door that Bernard had somehow overlooked despite it being right in front of him.
“What’s behind this door?” she asked.
“What door?” Bernard replied, confused.
What door, indeed. As it turned out, Bernard couldn’t see the door because he was programmed not to. And fans of Game of Thrones? They couldn’t see the door through their tears, because ohmyGod, remember what happened the last time a door played a pivotal role in a character’s story this way?
Needless to say, people reacted instantly to what seemed like a downright cruel ploy by HBO to re-traumatize them with the memory of Hodor’s death.
The first to make the door connection. Mind: BLOWN.

This guy broke down the journey from “What door?” to “Hodor!” into its distinct evolutionary stages.
