It happened in the bathtub. Emmy Rossum got engaged to fiancé Sam Esmail in August 2015, and it turns out he popped the big question while she was in her birthday suit.
The Shameless star reveals the new engagement details on the Thursday, November 24, episode of Chelsea Handler’s Netflix talk show, Chelsea.
“I happened to be in the bathtub when it happened,” Rossum, 30, tells Handler. “And then I realized that it was happening. And then I got out of the bathtub because I didn’t want the story to be that I was in the bathtub when it was happening. And then I got cold as it was still going on, got back in the bathtub. It was a comedy of errors, but it all worked out.”
Rossum believes Esmail, 39, wanted to surprise her, and if that was the case, he was definitely successful. “I really was not expecting it in the bathtub,” she says.
According to the “Slow Me Down” singer, she never had a “fairy tale” proposal scenario in her head, but instead always thought of marriage itself. “I was more excited by the idea, the concept of marriage and togetherness with the person and unity,” she explains.
Rossum and Esmail, who created the series Mr. Robot, had been dating for two years when he proposed. In July 2016, rumors of a secret wedding spread, which Rossum later shot down.
