Well, how’s this for a #ThrowbackThursday? Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump joined Megan Mullally to perform a Green Acres spoof at the 2006 Emmys, as seen in a recently resurfaced clip that you can watch in all its glory above.
The real estate tycoon, then 59, joined Mullally, then 46, to sing the theme song from the classic CBS series. The business mogul — dressed in overalls, a straw hat and holding a pitchfork — ironically belted out the lyrics, “Green Acres is the place for me / Farm livin’ is the life for me.”
After Trump finished his enthusiastic (albeit tone-deaf) opening verse, Mullally jumped in to sing in the distinctively high-pitched voice of Karen Walker, the iconic character she played on Will & Grace. Though their awkward number seems rather random now, both stars were up for awards at the time; Trump for best reality competition with The Apprentice and Mullally for her portrayal of the super sassy Miss Walker.
Back in January, the actress, now 57, opened up about the experience of hitting the stage with the POTUS hopeful, now 70, during an appearance on Conan.
“So they had this dumb thing on the Emmys called Emmy Idol, which — American Idol was at their height of popularity, and they asked people to sing various TV theme songs. So, ordinarily, I’d be like, ‘No,’ but, um, they said, ‘We want you to do the Green Acres theme song with Donald Trump as the character of Karen Walker from Will & Grace,’” she recounted. “And I was like, ‘Yes.’ So at the time, he was just like the kooky guy from The Apprentice.”
While she and Trump didn’t end up taking home any Emmys that night, they did win Emmy Idol — a feat that the TV personality turned politician was incredibly proud of.
“People ended up voting online or calling in their votes, so we ended up winning Emmy Idol. So the next day I was in my dressing room at Will & Grace and my phone rang and it was Donald Trump. …,” Mullally explained on the late-night show. “And he was like, ‘We really needed to win that.’ And [now] I’m thinking, ‘OK, if he needed to win Emmy Idol that bad, what must it be like now?’”
