Rob Kardashian was over big sister Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's lavish May 2014 European nuptials before it even started. The Arthur George sock designer, 29, famously skipped out on the festivities and bailed on the Florentine ceremony at the last minute. He was seen leaving Europe on the same day of the wedding.
In a June 2014 interview with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on the Today show, Kris Jenner, 60, was relatively quiet about her reclusive son's state of mind. "Rob is working on himself," Jenner said. "He's going to be OK. A lot of prayer and, you know, he's such a great human being … he's my heart."
In March 2015, Rob shocked his millions of Twitter followers when he posted a bizarre (and bloody) photo of Rosamund Pike's sociopathic, murderous character in Gone Girl — and likened her to his famous sister. "This is my sister kim, the bitch from Gone Girl," he wrote alongside a blood-splattered pic of Pike in the film.
A source later explained to Us what Rob intended by the update. “His post was about how she seems caring in public, but he feels ignored,” the insider said, while another source said he was "in a dark place."
Though he was a central star on the family's reality series in its early seasons, as well as on the spinoff show Khloe and Lamar, Rob refused to appear on seasons 10 and 11 of the hit E! series. As revealed on the reality series, his issues stemmed from depression and a lack of self-confidence. However, Rob finally agreed to return to the series in the upcoming season 12, and is featured in the show's previews.
In a season 10 episode of KUWTK, Jenner lamented to her daughters Kim and Khloé Kardashian that she didn't know what to do about her struggling son. "I'm not a therapist. I'm not a doctor, but I do know that we've got all of the resources in the world, and yet he doesn't access," the momager told the girls. A clearly passionate Kim shared her two cents about how to handle Rob.
"I think that now what we have to do is everyone back off … Everyone licks Rob's ass and does whatever he says. And it's just at some point, you just have to give it up!" Kim advised her mom and Khloé, who had been particularly protective of her younger brother.
The sock designer was mysteriously missing from the family portrait at the Kardashian-Jenner family's Thanksgiving 2015 dinner, held at Khloé's Calabasas, California, mansion. Later, Jenner explained her son's whereabouts on the holiday in an interview with Maria Menounos on SiriusXM. “He lives with Khloé,” the momager noted. “So he was around, and then went over to a buddy’s house."
The reclusive reality star began dating Blac Chyna, the ex of little sister Kylie Jenner's boyfriend, Tyga, in January 2015. The family wasn't pleased initially. The same day the news of their relationship broke, Kris tweeted about enduring a "challenging day." As the months went on, however, the family's opinion shifted as they saw Rob inch out of his shell and back into the public eye as his new girlfriend helped him get back in shape and improve his self-confidence.
Drama! While Rob and Khloé have traditionally been besties (Rob has lived with her for years), KoKo reached her limit in early 2016, after she learned about his romance with Chyna. “Khloé feels majorly betrayed by Rob after she always stuck up for him," a source told Us at the time. "She feels like this is a major blow to the family. Nobody in the family likes it.”
The Dancing With the Stars season 13 alum shocked everyone when Chyna confirmed in April 2016 that the two are engaged. While both Rob and his new fiancée posted pictures of her massive sparkler, the rest of his family was noticeably silent on their typically active social media accounts. A source revealed to Us exclusively at the time that Kris told her son that he was "making a mistake."
Rob endured a tense phone confrontation with his younger sister Kendall Jenner after she discovered that he had regifted her present to his fiancée. A preview from the upcoming season 12 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians showed the heated family moment go down, and Kendall explained why she was so upset.
"Rob is dating someone that has kind of had a bad history with my family, and he fully regifted my gift," she told the cameras. "On top of it, it's so annoying to find out through social media, because his girlfriend posted it. Like, there's some things that just aren't cool, and I don't think this is very cool."
On the season 12 premiere of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim expresses her frustration with the way Kris coddles Rob. “You should not be paying for your son, [who] is almost 30 years old, to buy a house,” Kim tells Kris in the heated exchange, while other members of the family (Kylie, Khloé, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris’ boyfriend, Corey Gamble) stare in agreement. Khloé then chimes in: “Drop him. Cut the cord."
