He was not impressed. Trevor Noah blasted Matt Lauer’s performance as moderator of the Commander-in-Chief Forum with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during a segment on The Daily Show on Thursday, September 8.
The comedian, 32, expressed frustration that the NBC journalist spent so much time asking Clinton about her email controversy that they had to rush through important questions about foreign policy.
“I don’t know what the f–k he was doing — and neither did he!” Noah said, comparing him to a crashing kamikaze plane. “Matt Lauer asked so many questions about email, I felt like I was stuck in line at the [Apple Store’s] Genius Bar. … Because Matt Lauer spends so much time on his questions about emails, the actual questions from the actual veterans about the actual commander-in-chiefing gets reduced to a speed date.”
Noah called out the Today show cohost, 58, for failing to ask follow-up questions about some of Trump’s contradicting claims. “Trump lies, he blatantly lies, and Matt Lauer moves on,” he said. “I would love to date Matt Lauer because getting busted would be impossible. It’d be like, ‘Who’s Thirsty Lisa?’ ‘Uh, my mom?’ ‘All right. Let’s move on and talk about dinner.’”
Then Noah joked about Lauer’s experience as a hard-hitting journalist by bringing up footage of a sit-down with One Direction where he pressed them about why Zayn Malik didn’t show up to the interview. When the boy band claimed he had a stomach bug, Lauer continued to interrogate them about whether Malik was leaving the band. “Matt Lauer can take tough questions to very powerful people and we’ve seen it before,” Noah said. “He called out One Direction in front of their fans, an army way stronger than Hillary or Trump will ever possess.”
