What’s Robert Durst doing? Going to prison, of course. The New York real estate heir and subject of HBO’s documentary series The Jinx has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to a weapons charge.
U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt approved Durst’s plea deal for illegally carrying a .38-caliber revolver last March on Wednesday, April 27.
Durst, who was arrested with the gun in New Orleans on March 16, will serve seven years and one month behind bars; he was previously facing a sentence of 10 years.
The accused billionaire is still facing murder charges in California for the 2000 killing of his friend Susan Berman.
As documented on The Jinx, Durst’s first wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982 and has never been found. In 2003, the businessman, who is believed to have murdered Kathleen, was acquitted in the 2001 murder of his Texas neighbor, Morris Black, despite testifying that he had dismembered Black’s body after “accidentally” shooting him.
During the final scene of the thrilling six-parter, which won a Peabody Award on April 26, Durst was heard off camera in the bathroom confessing to murder.
“There it is. You’re caught,” he told himself. “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Following the March 15 finale, Durst checked into a hotel in New Orleans under a false name, and was later arrested. Investigators believe he was attempting to flee the country.
