Texas senator Ted Cruz got his revenge Wednesday night — but at the cost of thousands of boos. The dethroned GOP presidential hopeful was booed off the stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on Wednesday, July 20, after he failed to endorse Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. While addressing delegates at the convention, Cruz urged voters to “vote with your conscience” after the controversial businessman, 70, was officially nominated as the party’s candidate on Tuesday.
“What if this, right now, is our last time? Our last moment to do something for our families and our country?” Cruz told the crowd while referencing the nation’s recent turmoil. “To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November. If you love our country, and love your children as much as I know you do, stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.”
As he neared the end of his speech, attendees realized the endorsement was not going to come. The crowd then started loudly booing the 45-year-old senator.
Cruz’s lack of endorsement comes as no huge surprise.
Trump was harsh to the politician throughout his campaign, even going so far as to imply in a March tweet that the senator’s wife, Heidi Cruz, was not attractive; Trump also attempted in May to connect Cruz’s Cuban father to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
