Smiling? Having a drink? Dancing? Twitter users took to the social networking service on Wednesday, November 29, to speculate how Ann Curry was reacting to former Today cohost Matt Lauer being fired from NBC News.
Amid the shocking news, many fans rallied in Curry’s corner and joked that she was likely celebrating Lauer’s termination. “Somewhere Ann Curry just started a group text with ‘Biiiiiiiiiitch’ #TodayShow #mattlauer,” one person Tweeted. The allegedly tumultuous relationship between the former coworkers was widely believed to have led to Curry’s tearful June 2012 departure from Today. Lauer was fired amid sexual misconduct allegations, Today anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb announced on-air on Wednesday.
During the segment, in which Guthrie read an email from NBC News chairman Andrew Lack revealing the news, she added: “We are devastated. All we can say is we are heartbroken.”
“Dear colleagues, on Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer,” the email read in part. “It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident. Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender.”
