Scott Weiland, frontman for the bands Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, died Thursday, Dec. 3, his manager confirmed to Us Weekly. He was 48.
Weiland died in his sleep in Bloomington, Minn., while on tour with his band The Wildabouts, according to a post on his Facebook page. His wife, Jamie, confirmed his death to the Los Angeles Times.
The Bloomington Police Department said in a statement that detectives are currently investigating the death of an individual who fits Weiland’s description.
Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro tweeted at 9:01 p.m. PT that “our friend Scott Weiland has died.” The tweet was deleted, and Navarro later retweeted a message of condolence from a fan.

Weiland is best known for his time with the band Stone Temple Pilots, which rose to fame in the early ’90s on the strength of such hits as “Plush,” “Vasoline,” and “Interstate Love Song.” The band’s 1992 debut album, Core, has gone eight-times platinum, while its follow-up album, 1994’s Purple, went six-times platinum. “Plush” earned the band a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal.
Weiland left Stone Temple Pilots in 2013, with the remaining members recently recording with Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington.
In 2002, Weliand formed Velvet Revolver with three former Guns N’ Roses members, including guitarist Slash. The band’s 2004 first album, Contraband, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the song “Slither” won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal.
Weiland’s debut album with The Wildabouts, Blaster, was released in March.
The singer has battled substance abuse issues for years. He discussed his previous heroin and cocaine use in a 2008 interview with MTV News.
He is survived by wife Jamie, whom he married in July 2013, and by Noah and Lucy, his two children from a previous marriage.
