Fighting for a fighter. Sarah Michelle Gellar posted a sweet message about her friend Shannen Doherty, who is currently battling breast cancer.
“My #mondaymuse (and really every day #muse) is my brave friend @theshando,” Gellar, 39, captioned an Instagram photo of the two on Monday, August 8. “I’ve always said she is one of the most loyal friends I’ve ever known, and now while she is facing the toughest journey of her life, she is sharing it with friends she has never met in the hopes of helping other people who are going through the same struggle. That’s a true friend #F–kCancer.”
In the snapshot, Gellar smiles next to the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 45. Doherty holds a bouquet of flowers and covers her shaved head with a pink cloth.
Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2015. Earlier this month, she revealed that the cancer had spread and she is undergoing chemo and radiation. On July 20, she posted photos of herself cutting off her hair.
The Charmed alum opened up about her journey in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I could not have gotten through this without my husband [Kurt Iswarienko],” she said. “My marriage was always strong, but it’s made my marriage a thousand times stronger. He’s never missed a chemo. He’s never missed a sick day.”
“The unknown is always the scariest part. Is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work?” she added. “Everything else is manageable. Pain is manageable, you know, living without a breast is manageable. It’s the worry of your future and how your future is going to affect the people that you love.”
Doherty is trying to stay positive and continues to give updates about her health on social media. On August 6, she posted a photo of herself and shared an inspiring quote written by author RM Drake.
“She was fierce, she was strong, she wasn’t simple. She was crazy and sometimes she barely slept. She always had something to say. She had flaws and that was ok. And when she was down, she got right back up. She was a beast in her own way, but one idea described her best. She was unstoppable and she took anything she wanted with a smile,” she wrote. “#cancersucks #warrior #fightlikeagirl.”
