Robert Durst of The Jinx Arrested on Murder Charges Ahead of HBO Finale: Details

Robert Durst
Robert Durst was arrested for the murder of Susan Berman one day before the finale of The Jinx.

Robert Durst may have made the wrong choice signing up for HBO's documentary series The Jinx. The miniseries follows the life of Durst, the heir to an NYC real estate fortune, who has been investigated in three separate deaths. On Saturday, March 14, Durst, now 71, was arrested in New Orleans on murder charges surrounding the 2000 death of his friend Susan Berman, ABC News reports

Despite the previous investigations, Durst had only been charged in one death (not Berman's), and was acquitted of all murder charges but sentenced to five years in jail for evidence tampering and for jumping bond. He was released in 2005.

After the HBO show premiered, authorities in Los Angeles reopened the case of Berman's murder. A key piece of evidence was found linking Durst back to his friend's death, which ultimately led to his recent arrest. Durst agreed to film the HBO miniseries after seeing director Andrew Jarecki's 2010 film All Good Things, starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, which was loosely based off his story.

The series finale of The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst airs Sunday, March 15 at 8 p.m. ET on HBO.
