You talkin’ to me? Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer look barely recognizable as Bernie and Ruth Madoff in stills released for the upcoming HBO film The Wizard of Lies on Thursday, Sept. 10.
The Hollywood mainstays, who are set to portray the disgraced financier and his wife, appear smug in the photo, in which De Niro-as-Bernie is seated in a plush armchair, wearing a black pullover, gray slacks, his wedding ring, and an ankle monitor.
Pfeiffer-as-Ruth, meanwhile, stands behind her man in a white shirt, light blue cardigan, black-rimmed glasses and platinum blonde hair.
The film will take a behind-the-scenes look at the massive Ponzi scheme that landed Bernie a 150-year sentence in federal prison for charges of fraud after he infamously scammed investors out of $65 billion.
Barry Levinson will direct the film and also serve as executive producer alongside De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Berry Welsh. The much-anticipated flick is based on the book The Wizard of Lies by Diana Henriques, with Laurie Sandell’s Truth And Consequences as additional source material.
The project originally garnered some buzz back in 2011, when The Hollywood Reporter revealed that rights to Henrique’s work had been bought by HBO.
