Dads and their daughters! President Barack Obama had an official duty to carry out at his 4th of July celebration at the White House — but he had an important family duty too!
It turned out that his final Independence Day celebrations in office happened to fall on his daughter Malia‘s 18th birthday. And as he addressed his audience, flanked by rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer Janelle Monae, who’d performed earlier that evening, the president took the opportunity to make a fuss over his older daughter.
Having thanked members of the military for working tirelessly to keep the country safe, Obama revealed he had one final task to carry out.
“It’s a job of a father to embarrass his daughters,” he said, before explaining America’s birthday happens to fall on the same day as his older daughter’s birthday.
While Malia presumably cringed off camera, her dad launched into a (pretty off-key!) rendition of “Happy Birthday!” But what was lost in tunefulness was made up for in sincerity, and as his daughter eventually joined her dad on stage, having evidently forgiven him for embarrassing her in front of the nation!
