Police: Fitness Instructor’s Killer Might Be a Woman

There’s a new twist in the Terri Bevers murder investigation: Her killer might have been a woman.

On Monday, April 18, the Dallas-based boot camp instructor, 45, was found dead and surrounded by broken glass in a church in Midlothian, Texas. According to police, participants in Bevers’ morning boot camp made the grisly discovery in the Creekside Church of Christ at around 5 a.m., when they showed up for her Camp Gladiator class.

The building’s surveillance cameras captured a person — dressed in SWAT gear — wandering around the building at 4 a.m., just one hour before Bevers’ body was found. Later that day, in a press conference, police chief Carl Smith described the suspect as a man. “His intent was was to look like a police officer,” Smith said. But now authorities have reason to believe the suspect, who appeared to be carrying a tool, could be female.

“We are backing off our statement that the suspect on video was a man,” Midlothian assistant police chief Kevin Johnson told KXAS-TV on Tuesday, April 19. “I know we said ‘he’ over and over again yesterday, and that was a mistake. There’s a lot of speculation based on the gait and appearance that this person may be a woman. It’s a legitimate question right now.”

Bevers’ husband of nearly 18 years, Brandon Bevers, described the suspect as “6-foot tall” in an interview with NBC.

On Tuesday, April 19, the widower wept at a vigil for his wife outside Long Branch Elementary School in Midlothian, Texas. “I wasn’t very good at praising my wife for what she did, and that’s one of my regrets,” he said through tears.

The father of three daughters — ages 15, 13, and 8 — grew emotional while speaking to NBCDFW. “[My wife] texted me every day and said, ‘I love you honey, I hope you have a good day,” he revealed. “She was an exceptional wife.”
