Before there was Twitter, Brangelina or the ongoing #OscarsSoWhite controversy, there was Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow (the pair split in 1997 after meeting on the set of 1995 thriller Seven) at the Academy Awards.

“My father was devastated,” she told Howard Stern in January 2015 of the reaction her late director dad, Bruce Paltrow, had to their breakup. “I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old. … I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me. … I didn’t know what I was doing.”

Another Hollywood It couple that regularly walked the red carpet in the ‘90s was Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.

The sweethearts wed in 1990 and split 11 years later. Cruise famously went on to woo and marry Katie Holmes (the pair split in 2012 after nearly six years of marriage); Kidman found love with musician Keith Urban in 2006.

Cindy Crawford and then-boyfriend Richard Gere made their public debut at the 1991 Oscars, but their relationship fizzled out in 1995 after four years of marriage.

In addition to the A-list couples of the ‘90s, there was also the memorable fashions. Boldfaced names such as Céline Dion, Claire Danes, Halle Berry and Drew Barrymore set the bar for red carpet outfits, posing in styles that included plenty of plunging necklines, silky figure-hugging dresses and velvet.
