Donald Trump, Josh Duhamel, Simon Cowell and numerous other celebrities have taken to social media to share their grief after a truck attack during a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France, left more than 80 people dead on Thursday, July 14.
An eyewitness reported to the Associated Press that he saw the vehicle drive into a crowd of pedestrians before the driver emerged from the truck with a gun and began shooting in multiple directions. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi told BMF TV that police said they killed the driver.
Estrosi tweeted in French that residents should stay home, and called this the “worst tragedy in the history of Nice.”
An eyewitness told the Telegraph that there was “absolute chaos,” with police “flooding the streets, including antiterrorism officers.”
President Barack Obama addressed the incident in a statement that the White House posted to Twitter, condemning “what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack.” He wrote that his office has “offered any assistance that they may need to investigate this attack and bring those responsible to justice.” The president also added, “We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.”
Donald Trump tweeted that he will be postponing a press conference planned for tomorrow, in which he was to announce his running mate for his presidential campaign.
“My prayers and condolences to the victims and families of the terrible tragedy in Nice, France,” the real estate mogul tweeted. “We are with you in every way!”
Celebrities such as Josh Gad, Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton shared their thoughts on Twitter, as did Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles, who changed his profile pic to an image of the French flag. Read the tweets below.
