Accompanying Cyrus’ post on Instagram were two photos, including one of herself in an alien mask wearing a giant poster that reads, “MTV won’t let me perform.” The second snap shows Cyrus without the mask, clad in a sign, reading: “So I’m hosting this year’s VMAs.”

Her hosting gig comes two years after her infamous 2013 performance with Robin Thicke that rocked the stage — and the Internet. During the memorable show duet, Cyrus gyrated with a giant foam finger to the tune of “We Can’t Stop,” and twerked up against “Blurred Lines” hitmaker Thicke, who seemed surprised by his co-performer’s wild antics.

Several months later, Thicke reflected back on the raunchy, headline-making delivery. “They told me [beforehand] that Miley’s going to take her clothes off and dance around and she might bend over,” he told Vanity Fair. “I just said, ‘I don’t care, let’s entertain the people… Let’s give them something they’re not ready for, let’s make them talk.'”

Cyrus, meanwhile, said she didn’t realize her pull until after she created so much buzz in August 2013. A year after her scandalous duet, the superstar attended the 2014 MTV VMAs, where she accepted the Video of the Year for her single “Wrecking Ball,” and didn’t perform at all. Cyrus had a homeless friend named Jesse accept the award onstage on her behalf to bring awareness to America’s homeless youth.

“I just didn’t realize my platform, I didn’t realize my power,” Cyrus told Ryan Seacrest the following morning after her big win. “I really realized it after the VMAs [last year] … there’s something special and there’s only few people that experience this that no matter what I do, there’s no winning or losing, it’s just going to be talked about. Period.”
