Absolutely frozen. Miley Cyrus‘ parents were just as shocked when their little girl got slammed by Nicki Minaj during the 2015 Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 30. MTV caught the singer’s family on camera when the beyond cringeworthy moment went down.
“And now… back to this bitch that had a lot to say about me in the press. Miley, what’s good?” the “Anaconda” rapper, 32, now infamously said at the podium inside L.A.’s Microsoft Theater. She mouthed: “Don’t play with me bitch.”
At first, Minaj’s comments didn’t seem to register with Cyrus’ loved ones, which included parents Tish and Billy Ray, sister Noah, half-sister Brandi, and half-brother Braison. They kept it together and grinned, seeming unsure as to what was going on.
In fact, it wasn’t until they heard Miley’s response that they realized that, yes, that really just happened. And yes, it wasn’t a joke. Noah, 15, and Braison, 21, kept to themselves and didn’t make eye contact with anyone.
Tish, meanwhile, kept smiling broadly through the extreme awkwardness. When the “We Can’t Stop” singer told Minaj “Congratuf-inglations” she quickly turned to look at two women sitting in front of her who looked shocked. In disbelief, Tish then appeared to mouth “Oh my God” to her husband. Patriarch Billy Ray, well, he took the opportunity to snap a photo of Miley on his phone instead.
