When Us Weekly broke news (and exclusive photos) of new Hollywood couple Michelle Williams and Jason Segel, nobody really saw it coming — except close pals of the pair.
"I'm surprised it didn't happen before now!" one source explains to Us. The My Week With Marilyn actress, 31, and 5 Year Engagement actor, 32, have known each other "for years" through Williams' BFF Busy Philipps, Segel's costar on Freaks and Geeks, the source explains. (The cult TV show aired from 1999 to 2000.) Williams is also close with fellow Freaks star Linda Cardellini, who once dated Segel.
Adds a second source: "They're much more serious than everybody thinks . . . They're really happy!"
Williams' most famous ex is the late Heath Ledger; she and the Oscar-winning actor shared a daughter, Matilda, now 6, and split five months before his shocking 2008 death. Williams dated directors Spike Jonez and Cary Fukunaga in the years after her ex's death.
But funnyman Segel may actually be the perfect match, a third insider says. "Jason is a cool guy . . . they mesh well together! He's the sweetest guy."

To that end, the couple are determined to make it work despite living on opposite coasts — Williams in Brooklyn, Segel in L.A. "They're happy to go the distance," the first source explains.
