Making a Murderer‘s Steven Avery is spelling out his innocence in black and white. The convicted murderer sent his supporters a message through his attorney, Kathleen Zellner, on Friday, January 29.
“To my supporters: I want every forensic test possible done b/c I am innocent,” reads a handwritten note posted by Zellner. Avery, who was convicted in 2007 of the murder of Teresa Halbach, dates the note and signs off at the bottom.
“Third visit WCC: SA thrilled about chance of new forensic testing — like innocent men always are. #MakingAMurderer,” Zellner tweeted alongside the image.
On Friday, Avery’s new attorney revealed during a Dateline special that the defense team has new evidence that could free him from his life sentence.
“We do, yeah,” she said in an interview for the show. “I can tell you generally that since 2007, there have been significant advances in forensic testing.”
Though she could not confirm specifically what pieces of evidence would be reexamined, she did hint that the blood found in murdered photographer Halbach’s car may be crucial.
“We will do everything necessary that is forensically available,” she said, adding that Avery is “doing much better now that he’s aware that there’s new testing that can be done.”
Earlier this week, both Avery’s elderly mother, Dolores Avery, and the original prosecutor in the case, Ken Kratz, spoke with The New York Times about the ongoing case.
“It’s not a documentary at all,” Kratz told the Times of the hit Netflix docuseries. “It’s an advocacy piece.”
Dolores, meanwhile, expressed exhaustion and exasperation at the never-ending debate.
“I’m too old for this,” she said. “It’s too much.”
