Life goes on. Lena Dunham took to Instagram to share a message about “starting over” after her split from her boyfriend of five years, Jack Antonoff.
“Starting over is the beautiful moment when you choose yourself,” the quote Dunham shared on Tuesday, January 9, via Instagram, reads. She captioned the post “❤️ forever love ❤️.”
As previously reported, Us Weekly confirmed on Monday, January 8, that the Girls writer, 31, and the Bleachers frontman, 33, called it quits after five years of dating. A source confirmed to Us that the breakup was “amicable.”
Dunham also took to Instagram Live on Tuesday to thank her fans for “saying really sweet things to her” on her latest post.
“I’m wearing this ring that Jack gave me … and I’ll always wear it,” Dunham said. “Because love is a really cool, powerful, eternal thing. It doesn’t have to be defined the way, we in Western culture, define it as beginnings and ends.”
The former couple, who started dating in December 2012, attended their last public event together nearly one year ago at a Grammys pre-party in February 2017. The last time Dunham shared a photo of Antonoff was in October. The Not That Kind of Girl author also wrote an essay about her relationship with the singer-songwriter that month for Variety.
“It’s safe to say that before Jack my life was full of far fewer sights,” Dunham wrote about Antonoff at the time. “He showed me the importance of making political statements using your public platform. He showed me the joy of collaboration. He showed me the magic of his home state of New Jersey and turned the butt of my snotty New Yorker jokes into a glimmering fantasyland. I know he does the same for all the artists he produces for, the fans who come to his shows and the recipients of his love. I try and share nicely.”
