After nearly 72 hours, Lamar Odom opened his eyes and regained consciousness on Friday, Oct. 16, prompting those close to the situation to react, including Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian‘s best friend, and other family members.
A source told Us Weekly that the former NBA player “opened his eyes” and “grabbed the doctor’s hand.” According to E! News, Odom uttered “Hey, baby” to his estranged wife, Khloe, before he fell back asleep. As of Friday, he is no longer in a coma.
Following the moment, Odom’s maternal aunt, JaNean Mercer, told Us Weekly in a statement: “No words can express the overwhelming gratitude we feel for the outpouring of support from around the world.” Mercer’s rep, Alvina Alson, added to Us that Odom “gave a thumbs up to the doctors this morning and said a few words to them.”
Kris also told Access Hollywood on Friday that her former son-in-law’s condition has improved. The mom of six shared an Instagram post, first uploaded by her cousin Cici Bussey.
“Mark 11:24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them,” the graphic read, alongside the caption: “#pleasepray #ourfighter.”
According to the Kardashian family momager (via Billy Bush), Odom spoke to Khloe, who has only left his side one time.
Kardashian’s best friend Malika Haqq shared the news via Twitter on Friday, and wrote: “Yes God!” Her twin sister, Khadijah Haqq, also tweeted: “God is great and a Miracle worker, I’m a believer!!! #PrayersForLamar.”
However, his condition remains critical. “He was not brain dead,” the source tells Us of Odom, who was found unconscious on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Love Ranch South brothel in Nevada. “The truth is, doctors are still figuring out a lot right now.”
