Turns out distance does not make the heart grow fonder — at least not in Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney’s case.
A source tells Us Weekly that the formerly engaged couple grew apart because of the time they spent away from each other due to their busy work schedules.
“It’s really sad and [Gaga’s] really torn up. They thought they’d be together forever. Distance was a big part of it,” an insider tells Us. “They weren’t together a lot.”
While Gaga, 30, owns a home in Malibu, Kinney, 35, is stationed in Chicago, where he films his NBC series, Chicago Fire.
“They had a good life and a lot in common, but were ultimately too different. I know he was always in Chicago and she went there all the time, but really had to be in L.A. or on tour, and it was hard for them to make their schedules work,” the source adds. “Distance was definitely a big, big issue.”
As previously confirmed by Us on Tuesday, July 19, the pair decided to call it quits earlier this month after five years together.
Gaga and Kinney first met on the set of the pop superstar’s “Yoü and I” music video in 2011, in which the hunky actor played her love interest. Several months later, the pair struck up a romance. While they broke up for a brief period in May 2012, they got back together a month later.
In February 2015, Gaga took to Instagram to let her Little Monsters know that she and Kinney had plans to get married. “He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day, and I said YES!” she wrote alongside a photo of her massive heart-shape diamond sparkler.
Days before news of their split broke, Gaga was spotted without her engagement ring while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with friends and family, including her mom, Cynthia Germanotta. Clad in a sexy pink swimsuit, the “Bad Romance” singer kept a low profile by hiding behind a pair of oversize white sunglasses.
This would have been the first marriage for both Gaga and Kinney.
