Showing her true colors. Kesha opened up about her demons and how she's fighting back in a lengthy Instagram post on Sunday, May 15.
"I have been battling depression and an eating disorder for a while now. my career is in a strange place and it feels like I'm fighting an uphill fight some days. but I have decided to take my life back. my freedom. my happiness. my voice. my worth," Kesha, 29, captioned a photo of herself giving the middle finger.
"I will not just f–king be quiet and hide. today I will say f–k it and live. So F–K it," she added. "today I'm making that choice. AND IM HAPPY AS A DAMN CLAM. and also a big ol f–k u if u wanna hate on my body. just remember that makes u look like a d–khead."
Kesha has had a rough couple of years. As previously reported, the "We R Who We R" singer checked into rehab for her eating disorder in January 2014.
"The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like, and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that," she told Elle U.K. in March. "I felt like people were always lurking, trying to take pictures of me with the intention of putting them up online or printing them in magazines and making me look terrible."
Kesha has been just as open about her professional woes. Back in February, she claimed in legal documents that music producer Dr. Luke was abusive toward her and raped her. She broke down in tears in court that month when New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich denied the singer's request to be released from her Sony contract. The case is still ongoing.
"Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha,” Scott A. Edelman, an attorney representing Sony, told The New York Times at the time. "Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party."
Kesha, meanwhile, continues to receive an outpouring of love from fans and fellow celebrities. After a brief social media pause, she thanked her supporters on Instagram in February. She also dedicated an original song to those who have stood by her side.
"Oh, I don't know what I would do, without you, oh no," she sang in a video, which was posted by her lawyer, Mark Geragos, on February 26. "I don't know where I would be." Last month, she also revealed that she's making new music with DJ Zedd.
