She never let go! If Kate Winslet looked surprised when she picked up her 2016 Golden Globe Award a few weeks ago, it’s because she genuinely was. The British actress, 40, opened up about the moment on the 2016 SAG Awards red carpet on Saturday, January 30, admitting it was actually her former Titanic costar and pal Leonardo DiCaprio that distracted her.
“I was shocked!” she insisted to E! host Giuliana Rancic. “To be honest with you, [it was] because I’ve been so focused on Leo and him winning everything and being so excited for him.”
Winslet and DiCaprio, 41, have played onscreen loves in 1997’s Titanic and 2008’s Revolutionary Road and are longtime pals in real life. DiCaprio is heating up the awards season circuit this year for his gruesome performance in The Revenant.
Winslet, who picked up her Golden Globe for best supporting actress for her role in Steve Jobs, also noted that her fierce competition kept her from thinking she would win this year.
“Also there were other actresses who have floated in and out of the supporting category but other consistent nominees have been Alicia Vikander, Rooney Mara, and I just thought ‘One of those girls is surely going to win, and I’m absolutely not going to win this,’ so I was genuinely, extremely shocked.”
The seasoned actress didn’t comment on her chances of winning this year’s SAG Award, but she was very happy with her emerald Armani gown (the first creation by the designer she’s ever worn), teasing, “I look quite nice, actually. I’m pleased with this look. Well done me!”
