Kate Hudson Felt ‘Abandoned’ by Biological Father Bill Hudson

The silver lining. Kate Hudson revealed in a new interview on Thursday, February 18, that she harbors no ill will toward her biological father, Bill Hudson, even after he “abandoned” her and her brother Oliver Hudson when they were kids.

“I think we both probably suffered differently and very similarly to anybody who feels abandoned by a parent,” the Pretty Happy author, 36, reflected to Jenny McCarthy on her SiriusXM show. Luckily, Kate and her big brother have dealt with the tough situation in a positive way.

“We can have a sense of humor about it together,” she said. “We can laugh at the challenges that we faced because of it — together. To be honest, our dad, who we don’t know very well, is really funny. So, it’s funny because, you know, it’s a catch-22. There’s a part of that, our dad actually, from what I remember when we were younger, had a great sense of humor. When we laugh about our father, we go, ‘We probably got that from him.'”

In fact, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress doesn’t see her strained relationship with her dad as something awful. “Life is funny. I just feel so lucky. I feel like it was a blessing,” she shared. “No matter what he goes through, I’m all forgiveness.”

Last Father’s Day, Oliver, 39, posted a throwback photo with his dad and sister, dubbing the holiday “Abandonment Day.” The situation turned very ugly when Bill publicly disowned the famous pair in a subsequent interview with the Daily Mail.

“When we split up, [Goldie Hawn] never had a bad word to say about me,” Bill, 66, said at the time about his ex-wife. “But when Kurt [Russell] came on the scene, the narrative changed and I became the big, bad wolf.”

A source subsequently told Us Weekly that both Kate and Oliver highly regarded Russell, who’s been with Hawn since 1983. “Kate and Oliver consider Kurt their father,” the insider explained. “He’s the best.” Indeed, Russell accompanied Kate on stage to present at the 2016 Golden Globes last month, when the two shared an adorable father-daughter exchange.

Meanwhile, Oliver revealed on Watch What Happens Live last November that he and his dad were in a much better place after the incident.

“It actually started a dialogue,” he told Andy Cohen. “We’re communicating now. [I] had an amazing three-hour conversation with him. … We’re texting, trying to see each other. So, you know, we might be mending something.”
