Oh yes he did! John Mayer is still taking jabs at ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift — nearly six years after their split. The “Gravity” singer joked about attending the 2015 Grammys while guest hosting The Late Late Show on Friday, Feb. 6.
“You can see me at the Grammys doing what I do best, being avoided by Taylor Swift,” the 37-year-old teased during his monologue. “That won’t make the Internet at all.”
The audience erupted with laughter at his cheeky comment as Mayer smiled. He even turned around and pretended to be waving to fellow attendees at the upcoming award show.
Oddly enough, Swift’s BFF Ed Sheeran was Mayer’s guest for the evening. The pair will also perform at the Grammys together. “There are very few people who can get me to come to the Staples Center for three nights of rehearsal, but Ed is one of them,” Mayer recently told Billboard magazine.
Mayer and Swift, 25, briefly dated back in 2009 and collaborated on the song “Half of My Heart.” After the messy split, Swift slammed the star in her 2010 song “Dear John.”
“[It’s] cheap songwriting,” Mayer later said to Rolling Stone in June 2012. “It’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait till he gets a load of this!’ That’s bulls–t . . . It really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down.”
His revenge? Mayer later wrote the song “Paper Dolls,” but kept tight-lipped about its inspiration. “Songwriters write songs because of people, about people,” he told Today show’s Willie Geist in July 2013. “Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don’t get involved with [it]. It’s none of my business.”
Swift is no longer friends with Katy Perry either, who’s also dated Mayer. Swift penned “Bad Blood” about the star off her new album 1989. Perry, 30, addressed the feud to Rolling Stone last month. “If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it,” she said.
Perry and Mayer split again in February 2014, but have been reconnecting ever since. Mayer supported Perry at her Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, Feb. 1, and even brought her dancing sharks on the Late Late Show earlier this week.
