Country singer Joey Feek will enter a hospice and spend her final days “at peace” with her daughters, her husband and Joey + Rory bandmate, Rory Feek, shared with fans on Monday, Nov. 9.
“We prayed. We all prayed. God answered,” Rory wrote on Monday in a blog update. “At 4 am on Friday morning we rushed Joey to the hospital in Muncie. Her pain had become too much to bare. A few hours later the doctors told us that the pain was from the cancer tumors continuing to grow and become inflamed and we need to concentrate now on helping her be comfortable. Not the answer we hoped for… but the answer He has given us.”
Joey, 40, who was diagnosed in 2014, received chemotherapy for Stage IV cervical cancer. Last month, she halted all treatments after it was deemed ineffective. Rory wrote on Oct. 23 that his wife was stopping all treatments and living out her final days with their baby daughter, Indiana, 21 months, and teenage stepdaughters Heidi and Hopie.
“Sometimes there just aren’t enough surgeries – or doctors — or chemotherapies — or prayers,” he wrote at the time. “And you have to wipe the tears from your cheeks and say the words that you were hoping to never have to say … Enough.”
Since the announcement, the ailing country and bluegrass musician has been struggling with immense internal pain.
“After a series of different medications that didn’t seem to touch the pain – heavy doses of morphine brought Joey sweet relief,” Rory wrote on Monday. “I spent the night in the hospital with her last night. Today we are planning to bring her home. The last couple of mornings, I’ve brought Indiana up here to spend time with her mama. Both of their eyes light up the moment they see each other. It’s been beautiful.”
Rory and Joey exchanged vows in 2002, and welcomed their little one in February 2014. At the time, Joey called the birth of her baby girl the “single greatest thing” she’s ever experienced. According to Rory, baby Indiana will be spending quality time with her mother in her final days.
“Hospice is arranged and a hospital bed will be delivered later this morning,” Rory wrote, alongside several heart wrenching photos of baby Indiana cuddling up to her ailing mom. “We’ll have a play area on the carpet nearby – close enough for her to watch Indy play, and for Indy to turn and make sure her mama can see her. Joey is at peace with where she is and where she’s going. So am I. An answer to prayer.”
