“Well, you know, I say every day, I really do feel that Joe would’ve made a great president,” Jill, 64, said during an interview with the Today show’s Natalie Morales, which aired on Friday, April 15. “I think he has the character, I think that he’s a convener. I think that one of his strengths is compromise. And so I feel, you know, maybe America missed an opportunity. I don’t know. It just wasn’t the right time.”

After months of speculation, the VP, 73, announced in October that he would not be running for president in the 2016 election. One month earlier, he told Stephen Colbert that he was still mourning the loss of his son Beau. The former Delaware attorney general died at the age of 46 from brain cancer last May.

“I don’t think any man or woman should run for president unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president; and two, they can look at folks out there and say, ‘I promise you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion,'” he told Colbert. “I believe we’re out of time. The time necessary … for winning an election.”

Joe has served as VP alongside President Barack Obama since 2008. On Friday, Jill said that she will miss being the Second Lady of the United States.

“I’ve got to do something different, which is to meet people, travel to different places and work with different people,” she told Morales. “It’s been an amazing experience.”
