“I had known about it, as a close friend. So I had really wanted for her to be the one to tell people that. And I worried a lot, as her friend, that something was going to leak or somebody would somehow take that and use it negatively against her, or to make her seem like she’s got a secret,” the “Black Widow” rapper, 28, told ET on Tuesday, June 10. “It’s not my business to say to my friend, ‘You need to fess up,’ but as a friend, you worry and you’re like, ‘Oh, my God, my friend, she has this thing that people can use against her and I really want her to own it.’ And she did!”

Lovato, 25, came clean on June 21 when she released her most recent song “Sober” where she sings, “Mama, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore / And Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor … To the ones who never left me / We’ve been down this road before / I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.” The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer had previously celebrated six years of sobriety in March 2018.

Azalea admitted that while she didn’t know Lovato had recorded “Sober,” she was “really proud of her that she was honest, because it’s really hard to be honest with yourself.”

“To be honest with the whole world, [to share] something that you struggled with very publicly, it’s something that is very admirable,” the “Fancy” rapper continued, before adding, “I was very proud of her to see her write that song and put it out.”

While some may have feared that Lovato’s confession would backfire, it actually gained her tons of support. Fans took to social media to express their respect for the former Disney star for keeping it real.

Before revealing the truth, a source told Us, “Demi felt terrible about herself and was really depressed.” But after she confessed to the misstep, an insider said, “She’s going to meetings again, going to the gym and taking care of herself.” Lovato later got new ink on June 25 to commemorate the new chapter in her life — a tattoo of the word “free.”
